The Bataan Military Academy (BMA) is a fully-authorized high school. The academy provides a worldwide college-prep curriculum for students in grades 9-12. Aside from the high standard of classes provided by highly qualified teachers, the academy also offers after school activities and athletic programs that develop leadership skills for cadets.

Bataan Military Academy-New Mexico is located at 8001 Mountain Road Place NE Albuquerque, New Mexico. Currently, the Academy’s chairperson is Cynthia Adair with LT (jg) Manuel Hernandez-Alzaga as the principal. It also has 20 teachers plus 1 TAC (Training and Counsel) – NCO.
Moreover, all of its students, called cadets, are part of the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps, which is the U.S. Navy’s youth organization. The Academy’s colors are navy blue and gold and its mascot is the mythological heraldry sea lion.
BMA differs from private military academies because it is tuition-free. Students who are from qualifying families receive grant funding to attend. However, it is the responsibility of the cadets to pay for their own uniforms and other U.S. Navy Sea Cadet Corps military-related activities.

Accreditation and Curriculum
The Bataan Military Academy is an authorized public high school under the State of New Mexico Public Education Department jurisdiction. This means that it follows the curriculum according to the State Standards Alignment. Furthermore, it is considered by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) as a Tier I school, which follows the criteria for an international classification. It is then accredited with AdvancEd, which is an international education organization.
BMA works with the University of New Mexico and Central New Mexico Community College to provide their students a world-class education. The Academy offers a standard high school curriculum. Cadets have also the privilege to add more courses such as AP classes and advanced mathematics through an online high school curriculum that is in accordance with the IDEAL New Mexico program.
The Academy is focused on leadership training and researched-based education. The cadets are expected to learn self-reliance, respect, honesty, independence, and good citizenship during their stay at the Academy.
History and Foundation
Bataan Military Academy was founded by Lieutenant Commander Shelby Dawson-Tallchief, the Associate Regional Director for Arizona and New Mexico in 2006. It first opened its classrooms to freshmen and sophomores since the 2007-2008 school year.
The Academy was named to commemorate the 70,000 American and Filipino soldiers who were forced by the Japanese regime into the Bataan Death March on the island of Luzon in the Philippines during the World War II. Most of these troops were part of 200th Division of the Coastal National Guard of New Mexico.
Under federal law, anyone can enter BMA. However, just like other schools, there is a process which any applicant must go through. The selection of the students starts with a lottery process. Once the students are selected, they must meet the Executive Officer or the Commanding Officer for an interview.
