The Naval War College (NWC or NAVWARCOL) as the name suggests is an education institute that educates and creates leaders who will form the future Navy officers. This college primarily focuses on variety of roles of the Navy and about their vision and mission. It helps in strengthening the global maritime partnerships and supports combat readiness.

The founder of the college is Stephen B. Luce. He was a young Lieutenant and was asked to teach people about the navy responsibilities and train them to be the upcoming army. This occurred when the Naval Academy was shifted to Newport Rhode Island as there was American Civil War going on.

This college currently works under the president ship of P. Gardner Howe, III, who is an alumni of the college of 1984 batch. He previously commanded various warfare units and was highly efficient for the assigned work.

Naval War College Extra Curricular Acedmics

NWC provides academic studies in 3 areas focused upon. They are:

  • National Security Decision making.
  • Strategy and Policy and
  • Joint Military Operations

This course follows trimester pattern. For the first two semesters, some international students of Naval Command College join the NWC students for seminars and lectures. Also every student has to enroll for an elective subject of his or her choice in every trimester. Few deserving students are permitted to get a knowledge of naval warfare studies which is an advance R&D program. These being a highly secured program, only the well deserved and performing candidates are provided with the opportunity.

The senior military officers from any branch of armed forces, government civil officers and the Middle grade officers are eligible to be a part of NWC. Also, officers from more than 100 countries are invited to attend few international programs.

Athletics & Extra-Curricular Activities:

Naval War College Extra Curricular Activities

NWC is big platform that even focuses on extra activities and athletics for physical fitness of the students which is the future navy.

They are encouraged to attend the varieties of seminars and be a part of even the civil personnel along with military responsibilities.

There are various social activities arranged like the ice breaker, local community activities, combining recreation with social responsibility and students are allowed to participate in these activities voluntarily.  Also, they can participate in volunteering troops and youth sports team,. They are encouraged to help local children with tutoring. These activities are self financed and few Morale funds and also Welfare and Recreation funds from the Naval War College Foundation.

The students along with the Dean conduct group athletics which consists intramural sports run through the base gym, There is a President’s Cup Competition (an interclass athletic competition held three times a year), and an Army-Navy Flag Football game. The college also has tennis, soccer, baseball and football courts with a swimming pool.

Hence in NWC, the future Navy is created with high efficiency.
