The Citadel Military College was established in the year 1842. It was Governor John Richardson’s proposal to transform the two state arsenals into an educational institution. The Citadel cadets showcased their courage and gallantry during the Mexican-American War, the American Civil War, and World War I. From offering a bare minimum of 3 courses in 1916, the college has certainly come a long way in terms of growth. Today, the faculty caters to 65 courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.
The area covered by the college is almost 300 acres in South Carolina. The infrastructure includes buildings incorporating classrooms, mess hall, library, chapel, student activity areas, administrative block, yacht club, tailor and laundry shop and much more. The college focuses on the all round development of students. The college environment and the efficient faculty promote the academic and personal growth of the cadets. In totality, the college houses 17 academic departments. These sections conduct 19 majors and 32 minors. There are evening programs as well that incorporate post graduate courses. All courses are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Physical fitness is a prominent part of cadet life in this institution. The college teams participate in competitions in the NCAA Division I upholding the mascot of Bulldog. The college also has the privilege of being on the rolls of Southern Conference since the year 1936. Some of the extra-curricular activities offered by the college for men include football, basketball, baseball, wrestling, tennis and golf. The women are allowed participation in soccer, volleyball, cross country, rifle, and golf.
