The Academy originally had one building designed like a castle which housed just dorm rooms and classes. It was established in 1892 by Dr. William W. Smith. In 1927, the building burned down and was built anew. Later, more land was purchased and a gymnasium and living quarters were set up for staff and the school headmaster.
Military program was introduced in 1918 and referred to as “National Defense Cadet Corps.” Military school structure was criticized over the years, but Randolph-Macon Academy held on to its principles. R-MA is currently a coeducational school providing AFJROTC programs and college preparatory courses to students from all over the country and the world.
